FWD Progress: Growing but Scaling Back

Baby Forward at 12 WeeksThe Game Forward family is quite literally growing at an exponential rate. We haven't taken on new staff or rented a fancy office space, but Nathalie and I are expecting our first child in March 2012. We're happy and excited and of course a little bit scared, though this will mean some changes to the way Game Forward operates in the coming months.

First of all, our gaming budget will drop drastically as we prepare for the arrival of our child. I plan to move towards an all-digital format when it comes to game reviews aside from the odd retail title we were already planning on playing. And while I hope to continue writing hardware reviews, we simply won't be able to afford every peripheral that comes out any more. Read More...

Rather than trying to keep up with new release games (something we weren't succeeding at as of late anyways), I plan to write more features on products and companies related to the areas we've traditionally covered and more opinion pieces, while I have Nathalie focus on news-style articles when she gets a chance to write.

There is also a very good chance that we'll gravitate towards more family-friendly and educational software in the future as our child grows and gets introduced to the world of video games.

Obviously, we'll have a lot less time to play games and write moving forward, so I'm setting the modest goal of publishing three or four articles a month, whether they be reviews, features, news or a simple blog post like this one.

As far as the site itself, I've been contemplating migrating the database to Wordpress rather than the Joomla CMS we've always run on. It's much simpler to keep running smoothly and updated, which would save me a lot of work, frustration, money and precious time. I also feel that a simple blog format will be more in line with the amount of content we'll be putting out.

In case you've been wondering what we've been up to (besides nesting activities), I was essentially unable to work for a few weeks a while back due to my spasms and Arthritis, so I've been playing catch up. I'm mostly plugging away at a couple of feature articles and playing games whenever I can.

I've been playing a lot of Kinect titles such as Rise of Nightmares, The Gunstringer, Leedmees and Burnout Crash on the Xbox 360 and my PlayStation 3 time has mostly been taken up with Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten, the latest entry in one of my favourite series, as well as the over-the-top Dual stick shooter Renegade Ops. It's been hard to plan what I'll review lately, but I will definitely be publishing one of the Nyko Zoom for Kinect in the coming days.

Nathalie has been focusing on taking care of her body and reading books for expectant mothers, but will still be compiling news articles and reviewing the odd iOS game when she gets some spare time and feels up to working.

Our original (and lofty) goals of becoming a large site or charity and hiring paid staff are no longer within reason, however we have no plans to discontinue the Game Forward project in the near future and are very much anticipating the next chapter in our lives. Thank you as always for reading. Please take a moment to follow Game Forward on Twitter, Like us on Facebook and maybe even visit one of our sponsors.
